Website Design: From Past to Present
Musing over the past 20 years or so, the world hardly recognized and appreciated the internet. Now it has become an integral part of every person’s daily living.
The internet’s possible application doesn’t stop at catering a search for a nice food recipe, or providing information on how-to-do list, but more than anything, it is an innovation of endless possibilities including providing a stable source of income for many freelancers and online entrepreneurs.
Website design requires great skills in creating attractive website to draw-in legions of visitors. This is the reason why web designers and developers are striving so hard to deliver the perfect design through improved graphics, content, SEO, and all the pertinent elements to make the design flawless. Needless to say stringent competition drives the whole industry to constantly revolutionize its craft.
Web design from past to present has gone a long way. From the past to the present, web design has accelerated its progress immensely. In the past, there were only single column texts website pages that were sitting still on the browser display. At present, however, so much has changed. Website design is “alive” characterized by its highly animated features and interactive capabilities that suits to the user’s preference. There is so much emphasis on “usability” too.
How web design transcends through time
During the early years of web design, designers use just one language to code – HTML. This occurred around the late eighties and so much development soon took place to handle many flaws and limitations. Today, web design has met every expectation of users. Here is how web design transcends through time from past to present.
The First Stage HTML
The first official usage of the HTML language in coding website pages occurred around the nineties. During this time the invention was still very raw. Everything that a website page could display was static texts arranged in one column, and that was it. Graphics and images were severely restricted due to the slow connection speed brought about by very limited data bandwidth. Dial-up modems were used then, and Mosaic browser was the first internet browser ever used which runs on Unix System. However, this pioneering browser has plenty of drawbacks and issues that had to be resolved.
The Second Stage HTML
During this time website design had started to develop and was pacing to catch up with the fast changing technology – web developers and programmers where now able to work on interactive interfacing. Although it was a success, there were other issues that were grabbing the developer’s attention. Such issues relate to website page presentation, arrangement, and organization. It seems website designers and developers who were taking advantage of the new interactive technology were overdoing their design resulting to unnecessary clutter and confusion.
Careless use of graphics, over-the-top icon replacement, overly decorated backgrounds, banners instead of headlines, were the hi-tech culprits that were making a mess on every website encountered. Despite this frenzy, the new improvement was good.
At this point designing the website has led to considerations on various monitor resolutions. Because web design is expanding and new cases started surfacing, the existing HTML tags can no longer serve all uses. And so, new tags were introduced and added and the new HTML 2 emerged. It is in this generation that website coding was explored more. Even so, internet speed is still an issue.
The Birth of W3C
As the internet became universal, a need to standardize internet protocols and practices became apparent to protect the future of the internet and its users from imposing proprietary rights of big companies that would attempt to grab exclusivity of their product and technology resulting in many browser incompatibilities.
W3C or the World Wide Web Consortium is an organization of experts whose objective is to watch website design and programming practices so that they all follow a specific recommended platform to avoid conflict between technologies. The W3C organization levels up differences between products by enforcing protocols and rules for their makers to observe and follow. Update on W3C rules are always provided for all designers and developers across the globe.
The Third Stage HTML
Highlights during this stage include the release of HTML 3. Other significant technologies that sprung out into existence were Flash players, improved sound effects, graphics animation, and the introduction of 3D technology. Internet Explorer browser was launched by Microsoft during this period. This was the period of bliss for web developers and designers to fashion and transform their websites according to their wishes. To wrap it up website design was cleaner, intelligible, and attractive to users. There was better presentation that reflected the prestige of website design.
The Fourth Stage HTML
The power of HTML 3 as well as other complementary technologies has proven their worth, but even this too bloomed into another problem. The constant need for plug-ins to run websites proved unwieldy. For instance, a website’s video content cannot run without Flash player plug-in, HTML 3 doesn’t have the capability to run video contents. This imperfection was already perceived early on until experts develop and introduced HTML 5.
HTML 5 was unique because it has all the advancements needed. It is fully independent to run a website alone equipped with all the hi-tech capabilities including video without the need for additional plug-in. Plus, it is well-matched with all existing web browsers to date. It is regarded as the future of website design.
The Present Time
Website design from past to present has progressed enormously. Gone were the days when all that a web designer could do was add nothing but all text to the website design. Now, every nuance in the art of designing has greatly been considered and is readily applicable with the latest technologies. It seems that the only limitation now is the creative ability of the designer. Since the rapid growth of Internet Marketing, website design and development has been pushed to new heights. Designers and developers need to consider SEO aspect in order to succeed in the search result competition.
