Social media can help make businesses grow and prosper. It’s a good way to connect and engage customers. Social media platforms like Twitter also give business an opportunity to broadcast information in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Businesses follow other businesses and also ask others to follow them back.

However, you might feel that some of them might be giving you the cold shoulder. Here are some possible reasons why people don’t follow you on Twitter.

Blatantly Asking Them To Follow You Back

Businesses and Twitter users for that matter aren’t obligated to follow you back just because you’ve started following them. Unless you know them personally and they know why you’re contacting them, blatantly asking them to follow you back is a no-go.

People who arbitrarily ask others to follow them back do not offer real value because their feeds are littered with irrelevant posts. Instead of asking just anybody to follow, pick those who are more suited to your brand or business.

In this connection, don’t ask people with big following to follow you back just for this reason. If you are looking for businesses that offer you value, they are probably looking for the same thing too.

Auto DMs

DMs are messages that go directly to the user’s inbox. They can be automatically sent to any new user that follows you. This practice is not perceived very well in Twitter. According to studies, there is a small percentage of people who send a “thank you for following” message to new followers. However a staggering 90% who send DMs send a sales pitch.

If you follow this practice remember that not many people like to follow users whom they feel are trying to sell them something. People on Twitter and social media follow each other in the hopes of gaining useful information.

Build a relationship first before thrusting your product in their faces. There are users that unfollow after receiving a sales pitch DM.

Too Much Automation

There is a fine line between scheduled content and completely automating it. When you schedule a post, it means that you have read and chosen information to post even though it will be posted at a later time. Automation on the other hand is when content is automatically fed in your Twitter account from whatever site you’ve chosen even before you have the chance to filter or adjust frequency of distribution.

This is risky because it can overwhelm followers with information and some of them might be irrelevant or inappropriate.

Practice What You Preach

There are a lot of businesses on Twitter. There are many gurus, brands and marketers. There are many legitimate businessmen out there so make sure that you walk the walk and talk the talk.

Many of these accounts are automated so they don’t really practice what they preach. They rarely send out tweets themselves and break the rules often. So be credible with your brand so people will follow you.

No Variety

It can be easy to sit on your laurels once you have hundreds of followers. However, social media including Twitter is a highly competitive space and posting the same boring stuff over and over again can cause you to lose followers or stop new users from following you.

Mix it up a little. You should have a wide array of posts from original content to RTs. Sharing the content of others, engaging other users and even talking about your accomplishments adds variety to your tweets. Constantly talking about yourself is boring. Remember you want to socialize.
