Australian National Maritime Museum

Working with the Australian National Maritime Museum was a privilege. Signals is not just a publication. It is an 80 page quarterly journal rich with stories of maritime culture, archaeology, exploration and history. From articles on the HMB Endeavour replica through to Antarctic expeditions, Indigenous art, maritime mysteries and Great Barrier Reef archaeology, the content carries depth and national significance. Our role was to help bring this respected journal into the digital space.

We were engaged to develop a custom iPad application that enables readers to purchase, subscribe to and access digital editions of Signals. As reading habits continue to shift toward mobile and tablet devices, it was essential that the museum’s publication remained accessible, modern and easy to enjoy on the go.

Overview

Project Details

Our app development team worked closely with the museum to ensure the digital experience reflected the quality and visual richness of the printed journal. The platform was designed to be intuitive and visually refined, allowing readers to browse articles, navigate between sections and store purchased issues in the cloud for convenient access anytime.

Performance and usability were key priorities. The app needed to handle image rich, content heavy publications without compromising speed or readability. The final solution delivers a smooth reading experience while maintaining the integrity of the journal’s design and editorial presentation.

What I particularly value about this project is how it supports cultural preservation through technology. The app extends the reach of Signals beyond physical distribution, making maritime history and research more accessible to readers across Australia and beyond. It is a strong example of how digital platforms can enhance engagement with heritage and storytelling in a contemporary way.
